The Unfinished Obelisk

Obelisks are one of the most prominent architectural landmarks in ancient Egyptian civilization. They are a purely Egyptian innovation that bears witness to the brilliance of the ancient Egyptian engineer. They were erected in towering pairs in front of temples like memorials.

The obelisk was known as “Tekhen” in ancient Egyptian, and it is a rectangular column made of a single block with a gilded pyramidal top that reflects the sun’s rays. Obelisks became a source of pride for kings, who made sure that the obelisks built during their reign bore their names and titles.

The Unfinished Obelisk was discovered in the early 20th century after being covered in sand for thousands of years in a quarry in Aswan, famous for its hardness and high quality. The unfinished obelisk was most likely commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut (c. 1473-1458 BC) to be erected in front of the Temple of Amun at Karnak, but work on the recumbent obelisk was halted after numerous cracks appeared in the stone. The Unfinished Obelisk is one of the tallest Egyptian obelisks ever, standing at 42 metres (135 ft) tall and weighing approximately 1,168 tonnes if it had been completed and erected.
